Make sure you ask stores that sell batteries whether you can recycle them or not. Hopefully this will force them to bring recycling in sooner!

Energy Group stand at Resident Association AGMs

The Epsom & Ewell Energy Group was invited to attend six of this year's Resident Association AGMs - those for College Ward, Ewell Court, Ewell Village, Stamford Ward, Stoneleigh & Auriol, and Woodcote. At some of these we also gave a talk on energy saving and the environment. Our display attracted a lot of attention and we were able to provide lots of advice and information. We aim to tackle the other Resident Association AGMs next year!

Energy Saving Plug Adapter released

Energy Saving Plug Adapter - Selected Currys stores are selling this new device which cuts the power of appliances left of standby saving energy and money!

DfT releases tables of lowest CO2 emissions vehicles

The Department of Transport has launched an initiative called Act On CO2 that provides drivers with useful information on how to reduce your emissions. The Government, which published it Housing Green Paper today, currently says that all new homes do not need to be carbon zero until 2016. The environmental campaign group also called on the Government to ensure that all new housing developments -as well as individual houses - are built to the highest environmental standards.
The white paper is available here.

Published alongside the white paper is the start of a Government consultation on the use of nuclear power in the UK. This consultation can be found here.

The most controversial aspect of the paper and the associated nuclear power consultation is the strong indication that nuclear power must form part of the UK's long term strategy in this area.

Organisations such as CPRE have responded to this aspect here saying that "asking whether the UK needs new nuclear plants is ‘out of sync’ with the need for immediate action to reduce energy demand and climate change effects, and places too much faith in nuclear power."

Should Plasma TVs be taxed?

Professor Paul Ekins says that Plasma TVs which use 4 times more energy than conventional cathrode-ray TVs should be taxed because of their greater impact on carbon-dioxide emissions.

Climate Change Assessment - Billions to face food and water shortages

"Billions of people face shortages of food and water and increased risk of flooding", experts at the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) have warned in their fourth assessment report.
